Art at The Market Place — Enjoy the “new” fine art gallery featuring the original paintings of local artists Cele Bryant, Betty DiBartolomeo, Sara Gray, Fay Terry and Joan Williams. Located at 2160 Midland Rd., Pinehurst. Open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Artist Alley, a collection of juried art and fine crafts from local and regional artists, has relocated to Broad Street, above Sweet Basil Cafe in Southern Pines. The gallery is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Info: 692-6077, www.artistalley.net.

Campbell House Galleries, 482 E. Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines, is the home gallery of the Arts Council of Moore County. Chanticleer, home furnishings and art gallery, features original artwork of Meredith Martens, Jessie McKay and Jeanette Sheehan. Gaslight Gallery is located in the Realty World Pinnock Real Estate Building at 115 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Southern Pines. Jewels of Pinehurst, a contemporary jewelry gallery in the village of Pinehurst, features the original art jewelry of owner Patricia Reil, handmade in precious platinum and gold, along with other goldsmith artists. Hours: Mon-Sat, 11-5 or by appointment. Info: 295-2824.

Kate Buie and Hannah Cole have a gallery featuring their work (and the work of other regional artists) at 113 West Main Street, Aberdeen, in the old Silk Route building. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Call 639-6401 for information.

North Carolina Pottery Center, 250 East Avenue, Seagrove, opened in 1998. The N.C. Pottery Center's permanent exhibits trace the history and development of the state’s pottery traditions from the prehistoric Native Americans to the present. Visiting “Pottery Country” and Jugtown/Seagrove is a great way to spend a leisurely afternoon. Most area potters are open year-round. For general information and area maps visit the office of the Museum of N.C. Traditional Pottery at 122 Main St., Seagrove. The office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Info: (336) 873-7887. Sandhills Horticultural Gardens at Sandhills Community College on Airport Road, Pinehurst, features 32 acres that includes the Ebersole Holly Collection, a specialized Conifer Garden, the Sir Walter Raleigh Garden, a formal English Garden, and a native wetland trail. Designed and maintained by the college's Landscape Gardening Department and Sandhills Horticultural Society, the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens are handicapped accessible and open daylight hours year-round. Weymouth Center, 555 E. Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines sits on 24 acres surrounded by stately longleaf pines. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the facilities are available for rent for private functions. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Docent led tours by appointment for $5/person. Info: 692-6261

Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, 1024 Fort Bragg Road, Southern Pines, has 898 acres of wildflowers, forest animals, streams and ponds, four and one-half miles of hiking trails with informative stations, a beaver pond, a newly rennovated museum with participation exhibits and a full-time naturalist. A Sunday nature study program is offered each spring and summer. Open Daily, except for Christmas Day. The Carthage Historical Museum provides a permanent home for artifacts covering 200 years of local history. Several exhibits reveal the town's past as the home of a renowned buggy factory, which the town commemorates each May with a popular family festival. House In The Horseshoe
324 Alston House Road, 10 Miles North of Carthage
Built around 1772, this 18th century plantation home features a gabled roof, large double shouldered Flemish bond chimneys and a shed porch. Formerly a cotton plantation, the house clearly shows bullet holes resulting from a 1781 skirmish between Whigs and Tories. Admission is free, site inspections may be made year-round, and group tours are welcome. Hours vary according to season. Annual events include a Revolutionary War Battle Reenactment the first weekend in August and a Christmas Open House & Candlelighting celebration in early December. Please call ahead for hours. Malcolm Blue Farm

Built around 1825, this antebellum farm has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places for authenticity and uniqueness. Structurally, it features the farmhouse and barns, the old gristmill and a wooden water tower, and stands as a significant preservation of rural history in Moore County. Annual events at the Malcolm Blue Farm include the Historic Crafts and Skills Festival the last weekend of September and the Christmas Open House on the second Sunday of December.  Shaw House Property
Morganton Road and SW Broad Street, Southern Pines
Listed in the National Register, this trio of historic houses depicts the daily life of early county settlers. The Shaw House, built around 1840 by Charles C. Shaw (whose son was the first mayor of Southern Pines), is an antebellum home, less elaborate than plantation homes, exemplifying the sturdy simplicity of its era. The Garner House, built around 1830, is a log structure that boasts wideboard heart pine paneling, original hand-forged hinges and board doors. The Britt-Sanders Cabin (also known as the Loom House) is a simple one-room pioneer home with a loft. Both were built around 1770 and were restored and moved to the property. Archaeologically restored site brings to life the culture of the Muskogean Indians of the Pee Dee area from more than 300 years ago. Religious, ceremonial and burial center tells their story through interpretive exhibits and an 18-minute slide presentation, as well as reconstructed structures including a major temple on an earthen mound, a minor temple, mortuary, game pole and stockade with two guard towers.
